The Department of English of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology connects with the world through its international linkages and engagements. It participates in integrating global perspectives into its curriculum by fostering partnerships with pertinent international organizations and academic institutions.
The faculty of Department of English has been in the forefront of this internationalization endeavors. With their active involvement in international forums, the faculty members share their research and contribute knowledge in their fields of interests to the world.
In like manner, the Department invites professors from universities abroad to deliver lectures. This opens more circuits of exchange in terms of research collaborations and knowledge production as it also builds a borderless atmosphere where cultures can engage in meaningful conversations.
The students of the Department also enjoy opportunities to learn and expand their own networks. They join international conferences where they get to discuss their ideas with professors and student counterparts from other universities.
The Department, in partnership with foreign institutions, also engages with local communities through outreach programs and extension projects. These programs and projects accompany researches that are aimed to add to the growing body of knowledge which is important to touch base in the University’s goal to become a research university.
UMY has been a consistent collaborator of MSU-IIT in research endeavors and conferences in various disciplines. This partnership is further strengthened by the recent activities conducted by MSU-IIT's Department of English and UMY's Department of English Education - the International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Linguistics (ICoELTICs) last August 25-26, 2021; the recently launched Project LIT (Language, Instruction, and Technology), which is a 3-month long teacher-training program that aims to retool secondary teachers In Indonesia and Philippines; and discussions on the possibility of hosting student exchanges for the BAELS program anytime soon.
Early in the year 2021, the Department of English has signed a 5-year partnership with the Humanities Division of the University of Hawaii, at Hilo, Hawaii, USA. Initially, the Department has invited some of its faculty members to deliver lectures for special classes either in the undergraduate or graduate courses. This time, the signed Memorandum of Understanding has formalized other activities such as hosting of Visiting Scholars and/or Professors, Research Collaborations, among others.
MSU-IIT has always been supportive of its partner Khon Kaen University, especially on its annual hosting of the International Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences (IC-HUSO). In 2019, the Department of English has fortified this friendship between two universities by signing a 5-year Memorandum of Agreement, which highlights the development of academic programs that will benefit students from both institutions, student internships, etc.
Very recently, MSU-IIT has inked cooperation with another world-class institution in Malaysia, the UiTM MARA. The ceremonial virtual signing, which was slated in September, has marked the start of a strategic partnership that specifically endeavors to strengthen, promote, and develop academic, cultural, and research cooperation of the two academic institutions.
The Department of English has established linkages through MOUs with three universities: Universitas Mohammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Khon Kaen University. Other engagements are sealed through Special Orders, giving authority for the Department to invite visiting professors and webinar speakers/lecturers as well as to conduct collaborative research. For UMY, some faculty members presented a public lecture and came up with joint research on MTBLE implementation in the Philippines and Indonesia’s perspective of Mother Tongue and English as a Foreign Language. Moreover, BAELS students and faculty took part in the recent International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Linguistics (ICOELTICS).
Initial engagement with the University of Hawaii-Hilo (UH-H) started as a collegial invitation to Dr. Francisco Dumanig to sit as dissertation external examiner/panel member in 2017. A year later, the academic platform was extended to invite Dr. Rodney Jubilado. With the Department’s efforts to contribute to knowledge production through its curricular programs (both the undergraduate and graduate), we conducted the first National Conference Workshop on Language and Literature (NCWoLL) in 2017. Aimed at providing the venue for our students to present their research outputs, the conference also attracted many participants from other universities outside Region 9 and 10. Due to the 2017 NCWoLL success, the Department invited Dr. Rodney Jubilado of UH-H as Plenary Speaker during the 2018 NCWoLL. As visiting professor, he also conducted lectures to graduate students. Since then, he has been part of creating opportunities for the Department and UH-H to make the collaboration binding through a Memorandum of Understanding. The other visiting professor in 2018 was Dr. Nurhayati Rahman from Universitas Hasanuddin, Makasar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
With these engagements, the Department is looking forward to exploring other activities like student exchange, faculty/scholar/staff exchanges, research collaboration, material exchange (such as library materials), and training and technical assistance.
Individual faculty members of the Department of English have international engagements as paper presenters in conferences, training participants, webinar speakers/lecturers, curriculum-based collaborations, workshop moderators/facilitators, and research collaborators.
BAELS students have presented papers at national and international conferences.
