The University's extension agenda is based on WE CARE, a framework developed to capture the work of the University and its different colleges.
The College’s extension and community involvement are anchored on the institutionalized extension framework of the University. The initiatives, efforts, and programs are geared towards the achievement of MSU-IIT’s vision and through the fulfillment of its mission. Guided by the University’s core values the different departments of CASS with their respective pool of experts closely work together with the staff, students, administrators, and community partners to provide a strong extension program that contributes to building peaceful and sustainable communities with individuals who are socially responsible, humanistic and culturally sensitive.
Since its inception in 2018, the Essay Writing Competition has been the Department’s longest-running extension project, deeply aligned with the ideals of the WE CARE Office - the office in-charge of the University’s community service programs.
This initiative is an annual celebration of the Women’s Month and Human Rights Day, fostering awareness and empowerment through creative expression. In partnership with the Department of Education-Iligan, the project aims to enhance the writing skills of high school and college students, providing them with a platform to engage critically with social, cultural, and political issues, particularly those related to gender and women's rights.
Over the past five years, the competition has attracted more than 130 participants and reached over 700 students, teachers, and scholars through accompanying webinars and training sessions. The speakers—renowned writers, NGO leaders, academics, and experts—have offered valuable insights on gender, social justice, and women's contributions to society. These sessions have not only refined the contestants' writing but have also nurtured their critical thinking skills, encouraging a deeper understanding of gender issues and human rights.
Further extending its impact, the book Harvesting the Gains was launched in 2024 as an anthology of the winning essays over the past five (5) years. This book serves as a tangible contribution to women’s literature, recognizing the achievements of the winners and their coaches while strengthening the partnership between MSU-IIT and DepEd-Iligan. It also underscores the importance of writing and literacy in an age where students’ reading and writing skills are increasingly challenged by technological shifts.
The success of this extension program is a testament to the collaborative spirit of the Department of English, its commitment to community engagement, and its ongoing dedication to supporting the youth’s academic and personal growth. Through expert-led sessions and direct community involvement, the department has created meaningful spaces for the youth to develop both their skills and their understanding of critical social issues.
This project is also supported by the Institute's Gender and Development Resource Center and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, reinforcing MSU-IIT's dedication to community service and advocacy for women’s rights.
